We’ve sold Karastan alongside hand-knotted rugs for years. Here’s our honest answer: for residential use in moderate-traffic rooms, Karastan’s machine-woven construction performs comparably to mid-grade hand-tufted rugs and outperforms most on color retention. We carry it because it delivers on what it promises.
Karastan has been manufacturing machine-woven rugs in North Carolina since 1928. Their proprietary face-to-face weaving method locks pile fiber more densely than most domestic machine-woven competitors, which is why Karastan rugs hold their texture and color longer than the price point would suggest.
Right choice when: traditional or transitional look, durability in a formal space, wool-feel without hand-knotted price, buying for 5–10+ years.
Not the right choice when: minimalist or strongly contemporary space, or you want a hand-knotted investment piece — for that, look at Feizy.
Yes, for what they are: high-quality machine-woven rugs that outlast most competitors. The wool collections outperform on texture retention and color accuracy. Not worth it if you expect hand-knotted quality or value appreciation.
EverStrand is recycled polyester — durability and stain resistance for high-traffic areas. SmartStrand is triexta — softer underfoot with stain protection baked into the fiber itself. SmartStrand for bedrooms and living rooms; EverStrand for working rooms.
Customers who bought Karastan from us 5+ years ago are still recommending it.
