How to Choose the Right Size Area Rug for Living Rooms

Picking a rug size can be intimidating if you aren’t sure where to begin. At Rug Fashion Store, we are proud to offer options for every space, style and budget. Below we show three options for area rug size in the same living room.

If you’re having trouble picturing different area rug sizes in your home, check out the illustrations. If you’re still having trouble, get free design help from our interior designers.

Option 1 - Under the Coffee Table

If you don’t have space or budget for a large area rugs, this is a great option. The exposed floor between the sofa and rug will accent the furniture. This size also helps frame the seating area.

Option 2 - Legs half On

This is a great rug placement when large furniture, like a sofa, is anchored against a wall.

You can experiment with the other furniture placement, but a general rule of thumb is to stay consistent. If the front two legs of the anchored sofa are on, keep the front two legs of the rest on as well.

Option 3 - Full Coverage

When furniture is floating in the center of a larger room, the rug should be large enough so the furniture can sit with all legs on top.

Bigger area rugs make the space feel bigger, as long as 18 inches or more of floor is exposed around the edges.

Still not sure what size to choose?

We know that choosing a size can be intimidating and we want you to be happy with your rug.

Rug Fashion Store has interior designers on staff to help you pick the perfect rug.
